A Quick Note From Kyle...

One of the biggest interview mistakes I see — across every salary level — is answering only the surface question.
Most interview questions have two layers: what’s being asked… and what the employer is really trying to understand.
This week, let’s focus on how to recognize and respond to the question behind the question — because that’s where offers are won.

Job Search Insight of the Week

Answer the Question Behind the Question

When an interviewer asks:

“Tell me about a time you handled conflict.”

They’re rarely just asking about conflict.

They’re asking:

  • Are you emotionally steady?
  • Do you escalate problems or solve them?
  • Can you maintain professionalism under pressure?
  • Will you create drama on this team?

When they ask:

“Why are you leaving your current role?”

They’re really asking:

  • Are you difficult?
  • Are you running from something?
  • Will you leave us the same way?

Every question has a surface layer and a deeper layer.

Strong candidates don’t just answer the literal question. They respond in a way that reduces risk and builds trust.

Before your next interview, practice asking yourself:
“What are they really trying to learn about me with this question?”

That shift alone changes your preparation — and your results.

From the Book: Get the Job You Love

In Get the Job You Love, I talk about the importance of clarity in shaping your professional identity.

When you’ve taken time to define your strengths, your ideal work environment, and the type of role that aligns with your long-term goals, interviews feel different. You’re not scrambling to respond. You’re drawing from clarity.

Understanding your ideal job characteristics helps you:

  • Frame your experience intentionally
  • Communicate your value more confidently
  • Ask stronger questions
  • Evaluate whether the role truly fits

When you know who you are professionally, you’re better equipped to respond to the question behind the question — because you’re not guessing at your value. You understand it.

Closing Thought + Invitation

Every interview question is an opportunity to build confidence — not just demonstrate competence. Employers are listening for judgment, clarity, and how you’ll show up on the team, not just what you’ve done in the past. Slow down, listen carefully, think one layer deeper, and respond with intention.
