A weekly briefing for job seekers who want real opportunities, smarter strategy, and an edge in today’s hiring market.
This newsletter gives you a weekly advantage by combining real job opportunities, recruiter insight, proven strategies, and practical tools—including excerpts from my Amazon Best-Selling book, Get the Job You Love—to help you stand out and move forward with confidence.
In this week’s edition of Your Weekly Job Search Edge, we’re challenging a common interview mistake: spending too much time proving how badly you want the job instead of showing the employer why they should want you.
Opening Note
If you made it to the interview, they already know you want the job. You applied.
Yet, we’ve watched countless candidates spend valuable interview time trying to convince employers how excited they are about the opportunity.
Enthusiasm matters. But enthusiasm doesn’t get you hired.
The employer is trying to answer a different question:
Why should we hire you?
That means your interview needs to be less about how much you want the job and more about the value you can bring to it.
What problems can you solve? What have you accomplished? What can you bring to this organization that another candidate may not?
This week, we’re talking about how to shift the interview conversation from “I really want this job” to “Here’s why you should want me.”
That’s a very different conversation.

Job Search Insight of the Week
Make the Interview About Their Problem, Not Your Job Search
One of the easiest ways to improve an interview is to change the perspective you bring into it.
Stop approaching the conversation primarily as a candidate hoping to be selected.
Start approaching it as a professional trying to understand what the employer needs—and demonstrating how you can help.
Listen carefully to what the interviewer tells you.
Why is the position open?
What needs to improve?
What challenges will this person inherit?
What does success look like six months from now?
Those answers give you clues about what really matters to the employer.
Then connect your experience to those needs.
If they need someone to improve a struggling process, tell them about a process you improved.
If they need someone to build a team, give them an example of a team you've built or developed.
If they're dealing with rapid growth, explain how you've successfully operated in a similar environment.
If they need someone who can influence senior leadership, prove you've done it.
That's the difference between telling an employer you're qualified and helping them envision you doing the job.
Your interview answers shouldn't exist in isolation. They should continually connect your experience back to what you've learned the employer needs.
By the end of the conversation, the interviewer shouldn't have to figure out how your background applies to their problems.
You should have already connected those dots for them.
If you're getting interviews but struggling to turn them into offers, our personalized Interview Coaching can help you learn how to position your experience, communicate your value, and make a stronger case for why you're the right hire.
Interview Coaching is currently available for just $100.
From the Book: Get the Job You Love
There’s one interview question that gets right to the heart of this week’s topic:
Why should we hire you?
Whether the interviewer actually asks those words or not, that’s ultimately the question you’re there to answer.
From Get the Job You Love:
“Why Should We Hire You? This question provides an opportunity to make a strong closing statement and leave a lasting impression on the interviewer. Summarize your key qualifications, skills, and experiences that make you uniquely suited for the role. Focus on how you can add value to the organization and contribute to its success, drawing on specific examples and achievements from your past experiences.”
Notice what that advice doesn’t say.
Spend more time explaining how badly you want the position.
Instead, the focus is on qualifications, experiences, achievements, and—most importantly—the value you can bring to the organization.
That’s the shift candidates need to make.
Enthusiasm can reinforce your candidacy. It cannot replace the evidence that you’re the person who can deliver what the employer needs.
Your interview should give them that evidence.
If you want more practical guidance for every stage of your job search—from resumes and networking to interviewing, negotiating an offer, and successfully starting your new position—Get the Job You Love was written to help you navigate the entire process.

Closing Thought + Invitation
Wanting the job is easy.
Showing an employer why they should want you takes preparation.
The strongest candidates don’t spend the interview hoping the employer recognizes their value. They make that value clear. They connect their experience to the organization’s needs, back it up with examples, and help the interviewer picture them succeeding in the role.
Your goal isn’t to walk away thinking, “I hope they liked me.”
It’s to leave them thinking, “That’s someone we need on our team.”
