You're Applying Too Late

A weekly briefing for job seekers who want real opportunities, smarter strategy, and an edge in today’s hiring market.

This newsletter gives you a weekly advantage by combining real job opportunities, recruiter insight, proven strategies, and practical tools—including excerpts from my Amazon Best-Selling book, Get the Job You Love—to help you stand out and move forward with confidence.

A Quick Note From Kyle...

Most job seekers think the hiring process begins when a company posts a job.
It doesn't.
By the time many positions are advertised, recruiters have already started sourcing candidates, employees have begun making referrals, and hiring managers often have a shortlist forming in their minds.
That doesn't mean applying after a posting goes live is a waste of time.
It means the strongest candidates are often building relationships, researching companies, and positioning themselves long before they ever click "Apply."
This week, we're looking at why timing matters in today's job market and what you can do to get ahead of the competition before everyone else joins the race.

Job Search Insight of the Week

The Hiring Process Starts Earlier Than You Think

Many job seekers believe the race begins when they see a job posting.

In reality, they're joining the race after it has already started.

Organizations frequently begin discussing hiring needs weeks before a position is posted.

Recruiters search LinkedIn.

Managers ask employees for referrals.

Internal candidates are considered.

Passive candidates are contacted.

Then the job is posted.

That means some candidates have already spoken with the employer before the first online application is submitted.

Does that mean you shouldn't apply?

Absolutely not.

It means you should build your network before you need it.

Follow companies you're interested in.

Connect with recruiters.

Engage with industry professionals.

Optimize your LinkedIn profile.

Stay visible.

The candidates who build relationships consistently have a head start over the candidates who simply refresh job boards every morning.

From the Book: Get the Job You Love

One of the biggest misconceptions about networking is that it’s only something you do when you’re looking for a job.

In reality, the strongest professional networks are built long before they’re needed.

That’s one of the reasons some candidates seem to hear about opportunities before they’re ever posted—they’ve invested in relationships over time.

Here’s an excerpt from Get the Job You Love:

“Building a strong professional network requires proactive effort and consistent engagement. Regularly reach out to contacts in your network to check in, share updates, and offer support. Show genuine interest in their work and accomplishments, and look for opportunities to provide value or assistance whenever possible. Remember that networking is a two-way street, and investing in meaningful relationships based on mutual respect and trust can yield long-term dividends in your career.”

Networking isn’t about asking people for jobs.

It’s about building trust, creating meaningful professional relationships, and staying connected with people who know your strengths and may think of you when opportunities arise.

If you’d like more practical strategies to strengthen your job search, expand your professional network, and position yourself for long-term career success, pick up your copy of Get the Job You Love. It’s filled with practical, real-world advice designed to help you navigate today’s job market with confidence.

Closing Thought + Invitation

The best job opportunities don't always go to the first person who applies.

Many times, they go to the person who was already known.

The person who built relationships before they needed something.

The person who stayed visible.

The person who invested in their professional network long before a job posting appeared.

Your next opportunity may not begin with clicking Apply.

It may begin with a conversation, a connection, or a relationship you start building today.
